Valencia weather in autumn: September, October and November month by month

Autumn in Valencia feels like a longer, gentler summer. September is still beach weather, October brings warm days and cooler evenings, and November is mild enough that most days you only need a light jacket. According to Spain's national weather agency (AEMET), average daytime highs go from about 28°C in September to 24°C in October and 20°C in November, with more than 160 hours of sunshine every month. The one thing to know: October is also the wettest month of the year. It does not rain often, but when it does, it can rain very hard.
This guide goes month by month with the official averages, explains the autumn storms locals call DANA or gota fría, and tells you what to pack. If you are planning to move to Valencia, there is a section on what autumn means for you too.

Valencia weather in September
September is summer with the edge taken off. Average highs are close to 28°C and nights stay warm, around 19°C, so you will still sleep with the fan on at the start of the month. The sea keeps its summer warmth and the beaches of Malvarrosa and El Cabanyal are still busy at weekends.
Humidity is high (around 67% on average), which makes the heat feel heavier than the thermometer suggests. Towards the end of the month the first autumn storms can arrive: September averages almost three days with thunderstorms, the most of any month of the year.
What to pack: summer clothes, swimwear, sunscreen, and one light layer for air-conditioned places and late evenings.
Valencia weather in October
October is many people's favourite month in Valencia. Highs average about 24°C, lows about 15°C, and you get over 200 hours of sunshine. Days are warm enough for T-shirts and lunch on a terrace; evenings call for long sleeves.
It is also the wettest month of the year, with an average of 77 mm of rain. That rain falls on only about five days, which tells you how it comes: in short, intense downpours rather than grey drizzle. Most October days are dry and sunny.
The clocks go back on the last Sunday of October, so from then on it gets dark about an hour earlier in the evening.
What to pack: T-shirts and light trousers for the day, a light jacket or jumper for the evening, and a compact umbrella or rain jacket just in case.
Valencia weather in November
November is when autumn really arrives, but by northern European standards it is still mild. Highs average almost 20°C and lows about 11°C. You still get around 167 hours of sunshine, and rain falls on about four days.
Mornings and nights feel cool, especially in older flats without much insulation, and most people switch to jeans, jumpers and a mid-weight jacket. Sunny afternoons are still perfect for walking in the Turia gardens or cycling along the seafront.
What to pack: layers. A jumper, a mid-weight jacket, closed shoes, and something waterproof.
Valencia weather in early December
Autumn ends on 21 December, and early December is already close to winter: highs around 17°C, lows around 8°C, and about 155 hours of sunshine. Frost almost never happens in the city. It is cool enough for a proper coat in the evening, but lunchtime in the sun can still be pleasant outdoors.
Autumn storms: what a DANA is and how to stay safe
In autumn, the Mediterranean is still warm after the summer. When cold air arrives at high altitude, it can trigger very intense rainfall over a few hours. Meteorologists call this a DANA (depresión aislada en niveles altos); locals often still call it gota fría. It is the reason October has the highest average rainfall of the year despite having few rainy days.
Most autumns bring only a handful of heavy showers, but DANA episodes can be serious: in October 2024, a DANA caused devastating flooding in towns south of Valencia. If you live here or are visiting in autumn, follow three simple habits:
- Check AEMET's weather warnings before planning a trip or a day out. Yellow, orange and red warnings are published on the AEMET warnings page.
- Pay attention to ES-Alert. Spain's public warning system sends emergency alerts directly to every mobile phone in an affected area, with no app or registration needed. If you receive one, follow its instructions.
- Know the emergency number: 112. The Valencian region's emergency service publishes updates on 112 Comunitat Valenciana.
On days with an orange or red rain warning, avoid driving, underground car parks, ravines and riverbeds, and stay informed through official channels.
What autumn means if you are moving to Valencia
Autumn is a popular time to move here. The heat has passed, the city is back to its normal rhythm after the summer, and you get to experience your first months in mild, sunny weather.
A few practical points from our work helping people settle:
- September is busy for rentals, because it coincides with the start of the university year. Read our guide to student rooms in Valencia in September to understand that market.
- Ask about heating and insulation when you view flats. Many Valencian buildings were designed for the heat, and November and December mornings can feel colder indoors than outside.
- Plan paperwork around the holidays. 9 October (Valencian Community Day), 12 October (Spain's National Day) and 1 November (All Saints' Day) are usually public holidays, and offices close. Check the official calendar for the year you move.
If you are moving this autumn, our relocation services in Valencia take care of the parts that make or break the first weeks: our apartment search service finds and secures your home (one month's rent, paid only when you get the keys), and our immigration consultancy handles the residence card, padrón and bank appointments with you.
